In 2010, I was like most every other American. I ate fast food almost daily, drank soda like it was water, bought my haircare and skincare products at the grocery store, and thought that as long as I was thin, I was healthy. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

My health took a turn for the worse in the winter of 2010/2011 and gradually worsened over the next five years until eventually my symptoms became so debilitating that I was considering applying for medical disability. This chronic illness gave me no choice but to become mindful of how I was feeding and caring for my body. This may have been my wake up call, but I was more tired and sick than ever.

During this time of illness, I read everything I could get my hands on about yoga, alternative medicine and a healthy lifestyle. I went from junk-food addict to cheese-loving vegetarian to plant-based vegan. I changed all my personal care products to natural, cruelty-free options. I learned about using herbs to treat common ailments and began experimenting with essential oils. I began practicing yoga and meditation. I took charge of my health, faced this battle head-on, and I won.

Finally in December 2015, I was properly diagnosed and treated for Addison’s Disease. Overnight, I was a new woman, finally reaping all the benefits of my hard work and research. Today, I am managing this disease with medication (since there are no other viable options at this time) and with the help of a healthy diet, daily yoga practice and essential oils. Because of my lifestyle, I am enjoying a healthier and more active life than most people do with this disease. While living with chronic illness will always come with ups and downs, I am better capable of dealing with these fluctuations because of how I care for myself.

I created Sleepy Santosha because I want to share what I’ve learned with others. I want to help others feel good. I want to help you feel good.
